Mueller, a renowned German-Australian botanist, was appointed government botanist for the then colony of Victoria in 1853, and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. Mueller dedicated much of his work to cataloging and describing the vast diversity of Eucalyptus species, which are now synonymous with the Australian landscape.
