Schwab started his career as a surveyed for Andrew Carnegie's Edgar Thomson Steel Works, and by age 39 had risen to become President of United States Steel Corp. He left U.S. Steel to take over Bethlehem Steel, which became the second largest steel maker in the United States under his leadership.
