Glasgow: Printed From The Fourth London Edition, 1776. 12mo. (ii), 78 pp., with half-title. With a folding table. Adams, The American Controversy 75-95q, and American Independence 220p; Howes D-37; Sabin 18347
An important American Revolutionary political tract, published in response to the Continental Congress’s Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms.
Authorship is disputed, with Adams claiming Macpherson’s authorship as the “strongest”, as he was retained by Lord North as a political writer, and Howes attributing it to Sir John Dalrymple. The work prints the ministerial position on the situation in America, and was widely distributed, going through over 20 editions.
