[Americana] Adams, John Quincy. Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette. Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress of the United States, Before Them, in the House of Representatives at Washington, On the 31st December, 1834

Washington: Printed by Gales and Seaton, 1835. First edition. 8vo. 94 pp. Inscribed by John Quincy Adams on tipped-in leaf at front to Congressman John J. Milligan: "John J. Milligan / from / John Quincy Adams". Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, stamped in gilt, joints lightly rubbed, corners lightly worn; edges stained yellow; title-page lightly soiled; dampstaining in bottom edge of most leaves. Inscribed first edition of John Quincy Adams's speech commemorating the life and character of Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette died on May 20, 1834, and this speech was read by Adams before both houses of Congress and a packed crowd of spectators, on December 31.

John Jones Milligan (1795-1875) was a United States Congressman, representing Delaware from 1831-39.
