Klaproth travelled to St. Petersburg after receiving an invitation from Count Potocki to accompany the Russian Mission to Peking; after making it as far as Urga, he traveled through Mongolia on his own, and in 1807, was comissioned to lead an expedition to Caucasus and Georgia.
