London: Printed for G. Robinson, 1776. First edition. 12mo. (vi), xxiv, (220) pp., including half-title. Illustrated with engraved folding frontispiece map of North America by John Lodge after Jeffreys, and one engraved folding map of the West Indies, by T. Bowen. Three-quarter mottled tan calf over tan cloth-covered boards, joints and extremities rubbed, boards slightly bowed; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed; marbled endpapers; by Riviere & Son; remnants of removed book-plate on front paste-down; small repair in bottom gutter fold of frontispiece map; scattered spotting to text. A handsome and scarce first edition of this pocket-sized guide to North America and the West Indies, designed for use by British officers and subjects during the Revolutionary War, and complete with both maps. A second edition was issued in 1778.
According to RBH, this is only the third copy to appear at auction since 2010. Of the previous two copies, one was incomplete and missing the map of North America.
