A Lincoln March 9. 1863". Creasing from when folded and mounted to old lined paper with albumen portrait of Lincoln and old typed description of same note. President Lincoln replies to a letter from his friend Anson G. Henry (1804-65) regarding the conduct of the latter's friend, Robert J. Stevens, superintendent of the United States Mint in San Francisco. Stevens was accused of corruption, and according to the New York Tribune, was reported to have "appointed or retained in office dishonest or vicious men" (March 11, 1863). He was subsequently removed from office and replaced by Robert B. Swain.
