Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES]. A large collection of 200+ assorted glass slides featuring illustrated historical scenes and artistic images, including:
76 glass slides housed in approx. 7 x 4 in wooden mounts, some with circular openings, others with rectangular openings; and 141 glass slides, approx. 4 x 3 1/4 in., unmounted. Many with remnants of original paper labels featuring typed and/or inscribed captions, several with publisher's imprints. Conditions vary, though generally fine, with moderate to heavy soiling/wear/loss to paper labels. Few with cracks to glass, some unmounted slides with loss to paper wrapping and taped repair.
Slides mostly depict various Civil War subjects including significant battles, important figures, key locations, political moments, patriotic symbols, and other categories, of which 20+ slides bear paper labels identifying them as belonging to the "Grand Army Republic" series. Specific slides include a printed map of Gettysburg, a bird's eye view illustration of Andersonville Prison by McIntosh Stereopticon Co., a political cartoon featured in the 5 April 1862 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper mocking the idea of compensated emancipation, an illustrated depiction of the execution of a traitor, a photograph portrait of General Winfield Scott Hancock, and an illustrated depiction of the assassination of Elmer Ellsworth.
Other non-Civil War subjects featured include the assassination of President James Garfield (4), the Mexican-American War (5), John Rogers sculpture groups (4), and others.
