Lot Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - RECONSTRUCTION]. Scent to the Legislature. Ninth plate tintype critiquing African American politicians representing the Republican Party. N.p.: n.p., ca 1868.
Ninth plate tintype after engraving. (Small scratches.) Housed in full pressed paper case (hinge starting, light wear to extremities). Captioned and titled in plate.
Reproduced after a political cartoon by Andrew, this Reconstruction-era tintype is a racist caricature of an African American politician with two white legislators holding their noses. With the caption, "Gren'plemen I'se wih' you!" and titled "Scent to the Legislature." Meant to lambast and demean the African American Republican politicians elected to office during the early Reconstruction era in the late 1860s.
