Lot Description
[1880 ELECTION]. A pair of James A. Garfield and Winfield S. Hancock metamorphic cards. New York: George H. Hanks, 1880.
Closed 3 5/16 x 3 1/2 in., open 5 1/2 in. (light toning, small dampstains to Hancock card).
A pair of humorous metamorphic cards critical of the presidential candidates in the 1880 election. The example for Winfield S. Hancock (1824-1886) shows the general as a rooster with the phrase "Hancock, Hancock. -Cock-A-Doodle Doo! June 24th, 1880." When opened, the bird has lost its feathers, Hancock looks emaciated and is bleeding with the second half of the phrase completed as "November 2nd, 1880. Hancock Hancock Boo-Hoo-Hoo." A two-stanza poem "Rhymes for Young Democrats" is printed to the verso.
The James A. Garfield (1831-1881) example shows a formally dressed and serious Garfield reading to an equally staid audience with the phrase, "At Home and Abroad or Two Phases in the Life of J.A. Garfield," alongside the quote "When I'm at home I preach and pray..." When opened, Garfield is depicted joyfully dancing with a provocatively dressed French woman with the stanza "When I'm Abroad...and often while an hour away with Ma'mselle C. Mobillier." The verso features the poem "The book of the Bribed."
