"Herewith I have the honor to inclose you Duplicate Invoices and receipts (one of which is on the original) for the Fox's and Sac's Antys [annuities] for 1811, and Invoices of merchandize intended for Indian presents, all of which were forwarded to me by way of Pittsburgh the 29th of June 1811."  

Upon his return from the Pacific coast in 1806, William Clark turned his attention to Indian Affairs, being appointed the principal Indian agent to the Louisiana Territory by Thomas Jefferson in 1807 and later Governor of the Missouri Territory in 1813, succeeding his former partner, Meriwether Lewis. He also remained active in the military, where he fought against the Sac and Fox in the Black Hawk War, two of the groups with whom he was trying to negotiate. The loss during this conflict forced the Sac and Fox to cede lands in Wisconsin and Iowa to the United States.
