Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. CALHOUN, John C. (1782-1850). Letter signed ("JC Calhoun"), as United States Secretary of War, to Jasper Parrish. [Washington, DC], 4 November 1822.
1 page, 7 5/8 x 9 3/4 in. (even toning, light creasing, and wear to edges and corners).
Calhoun writes that it will be impossible to receive a delegation from the Six Nations during the winter, citing the state of the appropriation for the Indian Department and the "great press of public business, which constantly occupies the attention of this Department..." He goes on to say that there should be no objection to a visit in the spring or summer "should the objects to be effected by it be deemed of sufficient importance to justify the expense which the visit will occasion the Government."
