[NATIVE AMERICANS]. BUECHEL, Eugene (1874-1954), photographer. WING, David, editor. Eugene Buechel, S.J.: Rosebud and Pine Ridge Photographs, 1922-1942. St. Francis SD: Buechel memorial Lakota Museum, 1975.
Folio. Portfolio of 39 (of 41) black and white photographs by Buechel (Lacking photographs Nos. 753 and 874). Loose, as issued, in grey cloth folding case (minor wear at joint).
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED EDITION, number 6 of 12. Buechel was a teacher and pastor on the South Dakota Sioux Reservations from 1902 until his death in 1954. He began photographing the people and landscapes surrounding him in 1922 using a folding Kodak No. 3 with a Kodak Anastigmat f7.7 lens. Subjects are mostly Native Americans including many children, religious gatherings, and families. This portfolio, produced to support the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum, reproduced Buechel's images from his original negatives "without cropping" with an Eastman Autofocus 5 x 7 diffusion-type enlarger on Agfa Brovira paper. The verso of each is stamped with the photographer's credit, edition statement, original negative number, and original date. Included in the portfolio is a statement and checklist of photographs with Buechel's annotation.
