Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. HILLERS, John K., photographer. "Mud Heads." Zuñi. [New Mexico]: [ca 1879].
13 x 9 3/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning, soiling, and a few spots of discoloration and paper loss within image, with wear including some loss to mount corners). Titled and signed in the negative, lower left and right corners. From a high vantage point, the camera peers into a Zuni pueblo to view a group of masked dancers. Unmasked subjects sit on ledges above the dancers. Image published as Plate 72 in Fowler's The Western Photographs of John K. Hillers with caption reading: "Koyemshi, or Mudheads, in plaza, Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, 1879. During ceremonial dances Koyemshi accompany kachina dancers to the plaza, provide cues for the dancers, and act as clowns between dances."
