Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. A group of 3 photographs of Native American subjects, featuring Nez Perce Chief Joseph.
Each 5 5/8 x 7 3/4 in. silver gelatin photographs mounted to cardstock with mats (some adhesive residue on mount, occasional chips to mounts). Verso of each mount stamped "Bureau of American Ethnology."
Intimate portraits of three Nez Percé men, notably Chief Joseph (1840-1904) who wears a war bonnet, several beaded necklaces, and a beaded bag. The subject wearing an upright feathered headdress appears to be the same person photographed by Edward Curtis in Nez Percé Warrior, from Portfolio 8 of The North American Indian. Though both subjects are wearing slightly different clothing to the Curtis images, both images do appear to have been taken somewhat contemporaneously. The third subject, unidentified, is seated wearing his hair in fur-wrapped braids, several necklaces, and a vest decorated with flowers.
