FRANKLIN, Benjamin (1706-1790). Partly printed document signed (“B. Franklin”), as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, 6 August 1787.
1 page, 14 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (visible area), accomplished in manuscript, paper seal for the State of Pennsylvania, folds, soiling. Professionally framed, 16 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania land document granting a parcel of land to John Bolseley, a private in the late army of the United States.
One of the most legendary figures in US history, "founding father" Benjamin Franklin was an author, political theorist, politician, abolitionist, printer, scientist, inventor, musician, civic activist, and diplomat. Often referred to as "The First American," he served as Postmaster General, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Commissioner to France, and President of the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage. When he signed this document, Franklin's official title was President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania (analogous to the modern position of Governor).
