Lot Description
Patriotic eagle and shield mirror. Paris, France: patented 1844.
2 1/2 in., small French made mirror manufactured for export to the United States. The cover features a raised patriotic eagle and shield under the relief motto “UNITED STATES of AMERICA.” The French patent information is noted in relief on the back of the zinc encased mirror, “B.C. / 1844 / BREVETTE A PARIS SANS-GARANTIE DU GOUVERT.”
The 2 3/4 in. zinc cover is attached to a brass pivoting arm. Removing the cover and pivoting it under the mirror places it into an upright position. Truly a practical device that enabled a soldier in the field to easily shave without a wall mirror or stand.
