The New Testament. New York: American Bible Society, 1861. Identified to John W. Johnson, 115th Ohio, SS Sultana survivor.
48mo (2 3/4 x 4 3/8 in.). Pages printed with frames. (Minor toning, occasional spotting). Original publisher's dark burgundy leather, envelope closure, edges gilt (extremities rubbed, small tears on flap, small loss to joint). Provenance: John W. Johnson, Co. F 115 Ohio Volunteer Infantry (Stencil on last page).
A small pocket bible identified to Johnson of the 115th Ohio Volunteers. The inside front cover and first page contain a poetic inscription from his mother entitled “A Mother’s Gift and Advice.”

John Johnson mustered into Co. F, 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 18 September 1862. He was one of 200 members of the regiment captured in December 1864 while guarding blockhouses on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. After being paroled in 1865, he was one of 1,960 paroled prisoners to be placed on the Steamship Sultana. He survived the infamous explosion of the Sultana and was mustered out on 10 June 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.
