Lot Description
WEBSTER, William G. The Army and Navy Pocket Dictionary. New York: Mason Brothers, 1864.
32mo (3 x 4 1/2 in.) Chromolithographic frontispiece, illustrations throughout. (Toned, occasional light spotting.) Original publisher's leather gilt (light rubbing to extremities). Provenance: J.H. Trago (ownership inscription to flyleaf); Tip Trago, Tiro, OH (bookplate to interior front board); Mary Trago, Tiro, OH (auction announcement newspaper clipping included).
War-era edition of the popular military pocket dictionary. The front flyleaf is signed what appears to be "J.H. Trago" to the front flyleaf. Possibly related to Samuel A. Trago who served in the 64th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1861–1865 and was wounded at Muddy Creek, Georgia 18 June 1864. A small 1864 table of Standard Weights and Measures is tipped-in to the inside of the back cover alongside occasional pencil cipherings.
