CRAIGHILL, William Price (1833-1909). Army Officers Pocket Companion: A Manual for Staff Officers in the Field. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. 

18mo (3 3/4 x 6 in.). Charts, diagrams, and maps. (Minor ink spots on rear diary/note pages.) Original publisher's straight-grained navy calf gilt (light rubbing to extremities). Provenance: George B. Nicholson, Louisville KY (ownership inscription to front fly leaf, dated 17 January 1865). 

War-era edition field manual written by Craighill of the U.S. Engineers and later Chief Engineer. Craighill was second in his class at West Point and was an instructor there from 1859-1862. During the War, he oversaw the defenses of Pittsburgh, Baltimore, San Francisco, and New York for the Federal forces. A general information manual for use in the field, with a tipped-in notebook with ruled paper for note-taking.
