Lot Description
Manuscript document issued by the Provost Marshal's Office authorizing the sale of corps badges. Fort Monroe, VA, 21 March 1864. 

1 page, 7 7/8 x 10 in., on Provost Marshal's Office letterhead, creased, with light discoloration and wear to edges and creases. Issued by command of Major General Benjamin Butler, this document grants permission to Mr. T.B. Dennis to sell within the department of Virginia and North Carolina, "Corps & Division Badges, Company Pins, descriptive and Battle medals, and descriptive Gold & Silver rings subject to approval of intermediate Commanders." Order written by "John [indecipherable], Captain and ADC, Provost Marshal."

This copy was received on 7 April 1864 at General Isaac Wistar's headquarters at Yorktown, VA. Verso inscription notes that this order would be, "approved if done at Yorktown only. By command of Brig. Gen. Wistar (signed) Stephen R. Reynolds, A.A.G."
