Lot Description
Corps Badges for the 1st, 2d, 3d, 5th, 6th, 11th, and 12th Army Corps. New York, NY: C.L. Balch & Co., 1863.

8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in., 4pp. illustrated catalogue promoting the sale of Army of the Potomac Corps badges, cavalry badges, artillery badges, company pins, Union League pins, masonic pins, and secret society badges (fold lines, with some toning to fold lines and margins, light soiling, some corner/edge wear). The first page offers corps badges with enamel centers representing the Army Divisions. This detailed catalogue also illustrates and lists prices of solid gold and silver badges and the additional charges to have the badges engraved with name, unit, and battle honors. Premiums are offered with the purchase of 25 to 500 badges. An inscription initialed "CLB" is written along the side, “Why don’t you get up a club and get for yourself a handsome watch,” which is a reference to the offer of premiums given to parties getting up (forming) clubs. Dated 1863, this advertisement illustrates how quickly a market developed for finer replacements to the simple die cut wool badges issued in the spring of 1863.
