GARDNER, Alexander, photographer. CDV of Army of the Potomac corps insignia and corresponding commanders. Washington, DC: [ca 1861-63]. With civilian letter and cover.
1 1/2 x 2 7/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (toning and soiling throughout, with vertical rip to upper edge). Gardner's faint imprint on verso. Likely taken prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, this image lists General George G. Mead as commander of the V Army Corps, a position he held until just three days prior to the battle.
[With:] Civilian letter written from Lunenburg, VT, 14 June 1863. Addressed to the author's sister, Eliza Stevens, in Hartland, VT. Accompanied by envelope featuring hand drawn Army of the Potomac corps badges across the top. Letter contains mostly home front news.
