Lot Description
Private Thomas Conner, Company B, 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, WIA Harpers Ferry, and captured at Maryland Heights. Folk art bone kerchief slide made while a prisoner of war.
2 x 1 5/8 in. carved beef bone kerchief slide (some colored wax missing, with dark patina to indentions). Face in the form of a heart featuring 18 stars incise carved along the edge to surround 4 ribands with text reading, "T.J. Conner / Prisoner / Of War / Sep 15," and "1862" at the bottom. Back portion of slide carved into 3 panels, 2 with floral motifs flanking central panel reading, "Co. B / 32. Reg / Ohio Vol." Carvings highlighted with colored wax in blue and red. Accompanied by a Civil War period handkerchief, included for display purposes.
Thomas Connor mustered into service on 6 August 1862, was wounded the following month on 13 September and, along with the rest of his regiment, was captured two days later at Maryland Heights during the failed attempt to defend Harper’s Ferry. The day after their capture they were paroled and marched to Annapolis Maryland, and then ordered to Camp Douglas, Illinois, where they were formally exchanged.
