Lot Description

Model 1861 US Springfield rifle musket dated 1861 with bayonet and frog.

.58 caliber rifle musket in untouched “attic found” condition. Deep aged brown color to the metal and dark patina to walnut wood stock with US inspector’s cartouche. Lock stamped with eagle and “1861 / US / SPRINGFIELD,” and “VP” proof mark with a trace of the eagle head at the breech of the barrel. Tang is stamped “US.” Rifle still retains the correct tulip-headed swelled ramrod. The bore still retains minimal traces of rifling as might be expected for a firearm that was heavily used. The flip-up leaf of the rear sight is missing. The original russet leather rifle sling is stamped, “MAKER / SMITH, BOURNE / & CO. / HARTFORD CT,” and the leather is complete and in supple condition. Though not a firearms collector, James Frasca purchased this rifle in the 1970s to keep as a classic untouched example of the Civil War infantryman’s weapon.

[With:] Model 1855 bayonet with “US” marking on the blade and the locking ring. 21 in. overall length (some darkening to bayonet).

[With:] US manufactured leather bayonet frog, once attached to scabbard (missing). Frog shows some scuffing but no flaking.
