Lot Description
[WAR OF 1812]. Political broadside promoting the candidacy of anti-war Federalist Thomas Rice for a seat in the Fourteenth US Congress. [1814].
8 1/4 x 9 7/16 in. letterpress broadside (creasing, discoloration). Signed in type by Samuel S. Wilde, Jeremiah Perley, Pitt Dillingham, and Peter Grant. Dated in ink along upper edge, "Oct. 22d 1814," and addressed on verso to "Mr. Robert Foy / Palermo."
Broadside is formatted as a letter, and was sent to town leaders of the Eastern District of Massachusetts, now Maine, arguing that "the only present remedy" to the "deplorable situation into which the fatal policy of our rulers has plunged the country, and the still greater calamities with which it is menaced" is a change in leadership. The letter informs recipients that Thomas Rice (1768-1854) of Augusta has been proposed as a candidate for the next Congress, and urges them to promote his candidacy. Rice would be successful in his bid, serving as a US Representative of Massachusetts from 1815 until 1819.
Signer Samuel Wilde (1771-1855) went on to serve on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (1815-1850).
