Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 9 ambrotypes and tintypes of Civil War soldiers, some armed, comprising: 

Ninth plate tintype three-quarters length portrait of a Union soldier with US belt plate and cartridge box. (Light scratches from mat.) Housed in Very Rare metal and leather union case, a variation of Fancy Geometric [Berg 6-141G] (some tarnishing to metal, light scuffs to leather). -- Oval ninth plate tintype half-length portrait of a Union officer with shoulder straps and Infantry hat badge. (Somewhat dark.) Housed in Rare geometric Union case [Berg 3-431] (small spot of tarnish to brass mat). -- Sixth plate hand-tinted ambrotype three-quarters length portrait of a military man. (Somewhat dark). Housed in full papier-mâché case with hand-painting and mother-of-pearl inlay (some loss to inlay, joint starting, puncture to rear). -- Two ninth plate ambrotype three-quarters length portraits of an officer clutching his sword. Buffalo, NY: J. Upson, n.d. (Some scratches). Housed in double-sided full leather case with clasp (interior velvet frame partially separated). Photographer's imprint to both brass mats. -- Together, 5 cased images.

[With:] Ninth plate hand-tinted ambrotype seated portrait of n infantryman. Quidnick, RI: V.G. Arnold, n.d. (Beautiful tonality, light wear to edges.) Housed with brass mat and frame (some tarnishing). -- Quarter plate tintype full-length portrait of a soldier. (Bend to plate, some darkening). Housed with brass mat and frame (some tarnishing). -- Ninth plate tintype full-length portrait of a man aiming a longarm. (Soft focus). Housed in full pressed paper case (scuffing, hinge split and rebacked). -- Ninth plate ambrotype three-quarters seated portrait of a soldier. (Some loss to emulsion, scratches, low contrast). Housed in full pressed paper case (hinge split). -- Together, 4 cased images.
