Modern Barbie Collection | What’s in a Label?
Barbie dolls have undoubtedly been one of the most popular collectibles in the world for over 55 years. It is estimated that over a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries and the doll’s popularity continues to grow. The company who manufactures Barbie, Mattel, estimates that there are over 100,000 avid Barbie collectors all over the world, many of who will be paying close attention to the online timed auction of over 2,000 Modern Barbie’s to be sold at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, August 3-14.
Janice Pye, a modern Barbie collector, had a passion for collecting and was a distinguished member of the International Barbie Community. She spent countless hours attending events such as the National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention, both as a guest and as a consultant. The knowledge and continued commitment she had for her Barbie dolls is evident in her unique and one of a kind collection. And now that the vast collection is available at auction, collectors all over the world can continue to share in the fun and joyful spirit of her hobby.
The collection includes a wide variety of Barbie dolls from Platinum Label to Pink Label, from modern to vintage inspired. Around 10 years ago, the manufacturers of Barbie decided to alter the way they produce and segment the categories of these dolls into labels. The labels are helpful for collectors in that they are designed to segment the dolls into tiered categories that are easily recognized by their packaging.
The Pink Label Collection is the fun, keepsake dolls that are not limited in production and are often sold at general discount department stores.
The Silver label collection is limited to no more than 50,000 dolls worldwide and comes packaged in a silver-trimmed “reveal” package.
The Black label collection includes dolls designed for the adult collector and are non-numbered.
The Gold Label dolls have only 25,000 editions created worldwide and can only be found at authorized Barbie Doll dealers as well as fine retailers (or at auction!)
The Platinum label collection is reserved for Barbie dolls that are only produced in editions of less than 1,000 worldwide. The dolls in this sale that are part of the Platinum collection represent the highest estimates and will likely cause a bidding frenzy as collectors fight over these coveted dolls over the course of the 12 day timed auction.
