Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - PICKETT'S CHARGE]. KEMPER, James L. (1823-1895). Document signed ("James L. Kemper / Capt & A.Q.M."), as Captain. Buena Vista, Mexico, 2 June 1848.

1 page, 7 3/8 x 9 1/8 in., partially printed copy pay voucher, creasing with discoloration. Voucher records payment of $52.11 for the services of Santus Sunega, a teamster who served in the Quartermaster's Department for two months and ten days, from 24 March to 2 June 1848. Document also marked by Santus Sunega ("X") and signed by a witness. Docketed on verso.

CSA General James L. Kemper participated in Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was wounded and twice captured by Union forces. Kemper later served as the 37th Governor of Virginia.
