Seven of the eight cartes bear New York or Massachusetts imprints while one is uncredited. New York photographers include Mathew Brady, George G. Rockwood, J. Hamilton, E. Fernegan, and J.T. Upson. Massachusetts photographers include C.R.B. Claflin and G.A. Harwood. 

The advent of Civil War stoked an initial wave of patriotic enthusiasm only tempered by the grim reality of Bull Run casualties. Then the sudden realization of a lengthy conflict with a defiant South. Children of wealthy urban New Englanders were quick to emulate their off-to-war blue clad fathers and brothers as evidenced by this outstanding array of photographs of uniformed boys ranging in age from 4 to 10. Interestingly, three of the youngsters are outfitted in grey uniforms reflecting the preferred color of American pre-war militia organizations. One determined young fellow stands with a Springfield musket and bayonet taller than he is. Another boy no older than five sports the shoulder straps of a second lieutenant. A later view depicts a pair of nonchalant brothers wearing nautical attire complete with anchors and stars decorating their double-breasted sailor suits. These are not yet true drummer boys, but still just young children dressed up to play army.

Together, 8 CDVs, 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in., or smaller, on cardstock mounts. The cartes are in very good condition. Five show rounded or clipped corners.
