Lot Description
[SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR] -- [WORLD WAR I & II]. A group of photographs and documents involving the Spanish American War through World War I and II, including:

66 photographs, many on printing out paper, approx. 4 x 3 3/4 in., possibly documenting the 1st Illinois Infantry at camp based on an accompanying document from a previous seller (toning, spotting and some soiling to images, some with edge and corner wear, some chipping to edges). Many images appear to be period copies of photos originally taken during the late 19th century, and capture military drills, camp scenes, soldiers with weaponry and artillery, and moments of leisure. During the Spanish American War-period, the 1st Illinois Volunteer Infantry was stationed at Camp Tanner, Camp Thomas, and Port Tampa. The unit traveled to Cuba where it participated in the siege of Santiago. After hostilities ended, the unit was sent to Montauk Point on Long Island, New York to be quarantined at Camp Wikoff before returning to Chicago.

[With:] 11 silver gelatin photographs, approx. 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., including some period copy images, documenting airplanes, steamships, and other watercraft, ca 1920s-1930s, many titled in the negative or with period inscriptions (toning, some scattered spotting and/or soiling, some edge and corner wear). Titles/manuscript captions include: USS Wyoming, Flagship. The battleship Wyoming (BB2) and third ship to bear the name Wyoming was commissioned in 1912 and became the Atlantic Fleet flagship. -- USS Seattle.  An "Armored Cruiser No. 11", the USS Seattle, first known as the Washington, was a United States Navy Tennessee-class armored cruiser. -- Coast of Greenland/ "some iceburgs." -- English plane coming close aboard to pay respects to US Army fliers. -- The "Liefe Ericsson" This 30 ft. boat is making a trip around the world. -- Coxswain of a "round" the world cruise. -- A "hit" - USS Richmond. An Omaha-class light cruiser, the USS Richmond was originally classified as a scout cruiser of the US Navy.-- "Richmond race boat crue." -- "'Richmond' air plane" with an additional notation with arrow pointing to "40 caskets of the sailors & marines that were left in 'Reo DJenario [sic]' Brazil." -- and 2 close-up views of a boat "Firing Torpedoes."

[With:] CORBIN, Henry Clark (1842-1909). US Army officer who served as Adjutant General of the US Army from 1898-1904. He served in the Civil War and the late Indian Wars, when he was commissioned second lieutenant of the 17th Infantry of the Regular Army and promoted to captain in the 38th Infantry, a Buffalo Soldier regiment, before being appointed to the official staff of President Rutherford B. Hayes, serving at the White House from 1877-1881. Following a string of promotions, he was elevated to Adjutant General of the US Army in February 1898, and later took command of the new created Division of the Atlantic in January 1904, then was given command of the Division of the Philippines in November 1904. He later took command of the Northern Division in February 1906 and was promoted to lieutenant general in April 1906 before retiring in September 1906. Following his death in 1909, Corbin was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. 2 ALsS, including: ALS ("H.C. Corbin"), to Dr. Troutman. 21 Nov. n.d.
