Lot Description
[TEXAS]. CHRISTY, William H. (1791-1865). Document signed ("Wm. Christy"), as New Orleans notary public. New Orleans, LA, 5 April 1842.
Visible 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. partly printed document (old creases with some separations, toning). Framed (not examined out of frame). A Public Instrument of Protest requested by Yeatman Woods & Co. "demanding payment" with an "original draft whereof a true copy is on the reverse hereof written."
Christy was a veteran of the War of 1812 where he was known as "the hero of Fort Meigs" and participated in the Battle of New Orleans under Andrew Jackson. Afterward, he settled in Louisiana becoming a prominent lawyer in New Orleans. He was a noteworthy supporter of the Texas Revolution, helping raise money for the cause, and was instrumental in helping Stephen F. Austin in securing loans. He also claimed to have pledged a large part of his own wealth to the cause. After the Battle of San Jacinto, Christy received the saddle and bridle of Mexican General Martin Antonio Mexia from his friend Sam Houston.
