Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Mann's Patent cartridge box by Gaylord, Chicopee, MA.

Federal cartridge box with approx. 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 x 1 1/2 in. internal box containing original magazine tins, implement pouch, and outer flap bearing indecipherable inspector's stamp and embossed oval with rim featuring text, "Col. Mann's Patent Re Issued June 7th 1864. / E. Gaylord Maker Chicopee. Mass." encircling large embossed letter, "US" (wear and crackling to leather throughout, full separation to implement pouch tab and upper edge of belt loop). Outer flap tab and brass finial present and complete.

Colonel W.D. Mann of Detroit introduced his patented cartridge box in December of 1863. He was awarded a contract to supply his box to the Army, though it was on an experimental, limited issue basis. The box was designed to replace earlier accoutrements, combining the cartridge box, pistol box, and cap pouch in one rig.
