Lot Description
[TAYLOR, Zachary (1784-1850)]. Half plate copy daguerreotype portrait of the 12th President of the United States.
Half plate half portrait of Zachary Taylor as Major General. (Somewhat soft focus consistent with a period copy image, tarnishing to edges, very light scratching and some dust specks to plate, spotting to mat, no preserver present; glass cleaned and resealed 2022.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear and loss, discoloration to satin pad). Taylor's face appears lightly hand-tinted. Provenance: Acquired in Texas (consignor note).
This portrait of Taylor appears to be a mirror-image copy of a previously unknown quarter plate daguerreotype currently held in a private collection. Along with the somewhat soft focus and straight vertical line present to the right of Taylor in this image lead us to believe this is a period copy/enlargement of that daguerreotype, which was likely made in 1847 or 1848.
