Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Half plate ambrotype featuring the A. Link Hotel, Coddingville, Medina County, Ohio.
Half plate outdoor portrait of a group of men seated on the porch of a hotel, identified by a large rooftop sign as "A Link Hotel." (Diagonal crack to plate, held together with transparent tape on verso, some loss to detail to right portion of image, few scratches and blemishes to plate, spotting to mat and preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (significant surface wear and loss, one closure clasp missing). Penciled note to case interior reads, "Clara Link Coddingville Medina C[ounty] Ohio." Right next to the hotel is another business, though the words on its sign cannot be deciphered. Each man in the image wears a hat of some kind, and the backside of a horse, doubtless the trusty steed of a patron, is visible in front of the hotel.
Abram Link (1818-1881) is listed in the 1880 Federal Census as a 62-year-old man living in Medina County, Ohio, and his occupation is listed as "Hotel." He had a daughter named Clara, who was born in 1865, and is likely the "Clara Link" referred to in the inscription on the interior of the image case featured here.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
