Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate ambrotype attributed as Confederate 2nd Lieutenant Alexander R. Humphreys, Co. D, 26th Virginia Infantry Battalion, and his wife, recovered from an estate in the Shenandoah Valley.
Sixth plate portrait of a bearded 2nd lieutenant believed to be Alexander R. Humphreys wearing a frock coat with shoulder straps and brandishing a Colt pocket revolver, seated next to a female companion, likely his wife, who holds onto his arm affectionately. (Tarnishing around subjects, spotting to plate, mat, and preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (fully split at spine, front and back covers do not match, heavy surface wear). Provenance: Recovered at an estate in the Shenandoah Valley, with items associated with George Preston Humphreys (related by consignor).
George Preston Humphreys was born to Alexander and Lucy Humphreys. An HDS search for an Alexander Humphreys returns an Alexander R. Humphreys who enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant, serving in Company D, 26th Virginia Infantry Battalion.
