Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate ambrotype, period copy image of a double-armed Union soldier. Ca 1861.
Sixth plate ambrotype, believed to be a period copy image. (Focus a bit soft, light tarnish/discoloration to edges.) Housed in full leatherette case (edge and corner wear, including surface loss to edges). A studio portrait of a fresh Union recruit standing with an unidentified musket and belted revolver, possibly taken during the summer of 1861 based on the shirt with sleeves rolled up. The subject is posed before an interesting but unknown backdrop.
Period copy ambrotypes are uncommon as the mechanism of photography had completely shifted to the more economical and easier to make tintype by 1862. The image is somewhat soft in focus, probably due to generational loss and an inadequate camera lens.
