Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Tintype of Union Army sergeant likely taken during the post-war occupation of Texas. [Palestine, TX], ca 1865-70.

Approx. 1 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. tintype bust portrait of a federal sergeant. (Multiple spots of image loss and light denting to plate, unexamined out of mount.) Mounted in a 2 1/4 x 3 7/8 in. paper sleeve (surface soiling and discoloration throughout, with light wear to edges and corners). Period ink inscription to mount recto reads, "Yours Truly" and verso, "Palestine Texas." 

Federal troops entered Texas in the summer of 1865, and would remain to ensure loyalty in government and to enforce the rights of formerly enslaved Black residents of the state for several years.
