Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 4 photographs incl. war-date CDV, post-war CDV of subject with amputated arm, and tintypes, possibly showing the same subject from the 78th Ohio Infantry, David M. Watson. 

2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount of a bearded soldier in uniform, wearing a US belt buckle and carrying a cartridge box. The subject is identified in period ink on verso as "David M. Watson / May 8th, 1864, Mary E. Watson." Zanesville, OH: J.R. Baird, 1864 (toning, spotting to image and mount, residue to lower right edge of print; corner and edge wear to mount). 

[With:] 3 images found together with the Civil War CDV described above, possibly showing the same subject after the war. Images include: 2 1/8 x 3 5/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount of a bearded gentleman with an amputated arm. Monmouth, IL: E.C. Hamill, n.d., post-Civil War (spotting and soiling to print and mount; edge and corner wear to mount). -- 2 x 2 1/2 in. tintype with mat (no preserver, cover glass, uncased) showing the bearded subject, his cheeks lightly tinted pink (light spotting/soiling to plate). -- 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. hand-painted tintype portrait of the bearded subject, post-Civil War (some surface wear including few abrasions to plate). 

David M. Watson enlisted as a sergeant on 12/4/1861 and was mustered into Co. I, Ohio 78th Infantry. He was promoted to 1st sergeant and 1st lieutenant before mustering out on 7/11/1865 at Louisville, KY. 

The 78th Ohio Infantry served from February 1862 until the end of the war. It saw plenty of action, as it participated in the battles of Fort Donaldson, Shiloh, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, plus the Siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and Sherman's Carolina Campaign.
