Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. CDV of 5 Union officers involved in a general courts martial at Huntsville, Alabama, most identified.

2 1/8 x 3 3/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount (vertical crease through image/mount). Anonymous studio portrait of 6 officers with faint penciled ID to mount recto, "Members of a Court Martial, 3rd Div., 15th (?), Huntsville, Ala., Mar. 1864." Addition faint penciled notation to verso, which reads in part, "Capt. Thomas Ping, 17th Iowa / A.L. Swallow / Lt. Col. P.P. Henderson (?) / Capt. A. Stoddard / Capt. L.W. Huston 17th Iowa / Lieut. S.S. Frowe, 18th Wis. / General Court Martial, Huntsville, Ala., March 28, 1864."

The following subjects were located in HDS:

Samuel Seldin Frowe enrolled as a private 10/10/1861 to
serve for the term of three years, in Co. B, 8th Wisconsin Infantry.
On 3/10/1863, he was commissioned 1st lieutenant, which rank he
retained until he was mustered out at Raleigh, NC, on 4/27/1865.

The 18th Wisconsin left Camp Trowbidge, Milwaukee, Sunday, 3/30/1862 and the following Sunday,  4/6/1862, Lieutenant Frowe was
taken prisoner with Gen. Prentiss' command in the "Hornet's
Nest" at Shiloh. He was paroled from Libby Prison 10/20/1862,
entering the Federal lines at Aikins Landing, James River.

The six succeeding months were spent in hospital at Washington
and New York. He rejoined the regiment then attached to 7th Div., 17th
A.C. before Vicksburg, 6/7/1863 and was present at the
capture of the city.

After participating in the battle of Missionary Ridge under General
Sherman, Frowe was detailed as a member of a general courts martial
at Huntsville, Alabama, which is presumably when the photograph offered here was taken.

During May and June, 1863, Frowe was Acting Regimental Adjutant. On 9/13/1864, he was detailed by General
Milroy as A.C.S. at Tullahoma, TN, and during Hood's raid in the fall of that year was Aide on Major General Milroy's staff, taking part in several engagements around Murfreesboro.

Thomas Ping enlisted on 4/5/1862 as a captain and was commissioned into Co. E Co., 17th Iowa Infantry; POW 10/13/1864 Tilton, GA (confined at Macon, GA & Columbia, SC).

Littleton W. Huston enlisted as a 1st sergeant and mustering into Co. B, 17th Iowa Infantry, on 3/25/1862; promoted to 2nd lieutenant 6/21/1862; promoted captain 12/11/1862; WIA 5/14/1863 Jackson, MS (severely wounded); WIA 11/25/1863 Missionary Ridge, TN; resigned on 9/20/1864.
