Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Georgia State belt plate. [Chicopee, MA?]: [Emerson Gaylord?], [ca 1850?]. [With:] Buff leather belt.
2 1/8 x 3 3/8 in. die-stamped brass and solder belt plate (some dents, minor spot of corrosion, scratches to verso). With hooks to verso, attached to approx. l. 35 5/8 in., w. 1 3/4 in. buff leather belt (staining, occasional nicks, separation at plate loops. Provenance: Purchased from the Horse Soldier.
Featuring the state seal of Georgia, though unmarked, attributed by Kerksis to Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. He notes that "As Georgia was an affluent and heavily populated state it had numerous militia units and apparently purchased a large number of plates for them." Kerkis 346.
