Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. New Testament owned by Private Harvy A. Shugh, 96th and 77th Ohio Infantries. [With:] Two war-time New Testaments.
The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. New York: Carlton & Phillips, 1856. 32mo. (Minor toning.) Leatherette with flap and gilt-lettering. Provenance: Harvy A. Shugh (name gilt to leather clasp).
Shugh enlisted as a private on 6 August 1862 and was mustered into Company I of the 96th Ohio Infantry on the 19th. He transferred into Company B on 18 November 1864 and again to Company C of the 77th Ohio Infantry on 6 July 1865. With the 96th, he saw action extensive action in the Western Theater, including the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the Vicksburg Campaign, and the Red River Campaign.
