[CIVIL WAR]. Archive related to Henry R. Shull, 1st US Light Artillery, including ambrotype, Book of Psalms, and discharge document.
Partly printed discharge document for Henry R. Shull as a Private in Captain Loomis L. Langdon's Company (M) in the 1st Artillery Regiment, accomplished in manuscript. "Before Petersburg," 13 September 1864. Twice signed, with inscription regarding Shull's character, by Captain Loomis L. Langdon. Verso with Shull's engagements listed for the year 1864 in another hand and signed by Langdon. -- 5 x 8 in. manuscript prayer reading, in part, "Jesus God and man do thou protect me against all manner of guns firearms long or short of any kind of metal keep thou thine fire like the virgon [sic] mary who kept herself in humility while in the flesh..." -- Approx. 3 x 4 1/4 in. Book of Psalms. New York: American Bible Society, 1862. Identified to "H.R. Shull" in multiple places. -- Approx. 5 x 8 in. manuscript biography of Henry Shull (fully separated along horizontal crease) identifying important dates and durations in Shull's personal life and military career. -- Approx. 4 1/2 x 8 in. funeral program for Henry R. Shull, accomplished in manuscript with song titles, burial details, and names of various participants. -- Together, 5 printed and manuscript materials related to the life and military career of Henry R. Shull.

(Shattered into several pieces, mounted to a piece of modern cardstock, portion missing to lower right.) Details of epaulettes, buttons, and gilt book spine highlighted in gold.
Henry R. Shull (1835-1929) enlisted as a private on 5 November 1861, mustering into Company K of the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment the same day. In February of 1863, he transferred into Battalion M of the US 1st Light Artillery. In 1864, Shull was engaged at Olustee, FL; Chester Station, VA; and Howlett's House, VA; with entrenchments near Ware Bottom Church, VA.
