Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 19 European daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, including:

Sixth plate fine hand-tinted ambrotype of a young girl with a book. Weymouth, England: Edgar Cox, n.d. (Exceptional clarity, minor spotting/discoloration to upper portion, spotting to preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a leatherette case (surface wear). Case embossed with Cox's imprint. -- Quarter plate hand-tinted daguerreotype portrait of a young lady sitting in a chair and holding a handbag in her lap. [Liverpool]: Beard & Foard's Photographic Institution, n.d. (Spotting and some tarnishing to plate, no preserver present; likely original seal.) Housed in a leatherette case (surface wear with some loss). Case embossed with Beard & Foard's Photographic Institutions imprint. -- Quarter plate daguerreotype copy of a postmortem portrait of a woman. [France]: n.p., n.d. (Extreme tarnishing, clouding, and spotting, nearly fully obscuring all details of image. Sealed in an eglomise mat with printed advertising label on verso. -- A trio of sixth plate daguerreotype portraits, two featuring men identified as John Grenside (1786-1873) and Rev. John D. Grenside (1820-1886), one featuring a woman identified as Frances D. Grenside (1811-1887). (Heavy tarnishing to edges, spotting and soft focus throughout, no preservers present; resealed.) Housed in leatherette cases (surface wear). Period paper labels adhered to outside of cases identify the subjects. Modern printed info card about the Grenside family included. -- And 13 others, including 5 quarter plate daguerreotypes, 2 quarter plate ambrotypes, 3 sixth plate daguerreotypes, 2 sixth plate ambrotypes, and one ninth plate daguerreotype. -- Together, 19 European daguerreotypes and ambrotypes of men, women, and children.
