Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 16 daguerreotypes and ambrotypes with affectionately posed adults and children
Half plate daguerreotype portrait of a bearded man and child, the man holding the child's face close to his own. Philadelphia: Root Gallery, Cook Artist, ca 1846-47. (Significant wiping and scratching throughout, with tarnishingn to edges and some other image imperfections; resealed1995.) Housed under mat and glass, no preserver, in a broken case (fully separated at spine and with missing parts). Back of case embossed "Root Gallery / Cook Artist / Cor Chestnut & Fifth / Phila" and with affixed paper label bearing inscription identifying subjects: "Joseph Liddon Pennoch and his newphew J. Dellers Pennoch (born 1843) (probably about 1846-47)." -- Sixth plate portrait of a young family including a toddler-aged girl with long hair standing between (presumably) her seated parents. [Pennsylvania]: Marston's, n.d. (Image rather clear, with minor tarnishing to extreme edges and minor spotting; resealed.) Housed in a leatherette case (general wear throughout). Folded newspaper clipping behind image features printed poem The Farmer's Daughter on one side and inscription "Anne Brierley from her devoted WEM" on the other. -- Undersized sixth plate portrait of a family posed charmingly, with the mother holding the baby on her lap, and the father leaning over to hold the baby as well. (Spotting to plate, spotting to mat; unsealed). Housed in a pressed paper case (significant surface wear and some separation to spine. -- And 14 others, including one half plate daguerreotype, one quarter plate ambrotype, 11 sixth plate daguerreotypes, and one ninth plate daguerreotype. -- Together, 16 portraits of adults posed affectionately with children.
