Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - ANIMALS]. An assorted group of 12 portraits featuring dogs and cats.

Half plate tintype portrait of an older man sitting on a bench with his canine companion (some surface wear, light spotting; not examined out of the frame). Housed in a frame with folk art wooden embellishments, many of which are have broken off. -- 3 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. silver gelatin portrait of a trio of kittens arranged on a tiered display shelf. Chicago: Howorth, n.d. (light toning and soiling to image). Howorth's blindstamp on mount recto. A gloved hand is visible in the image, nudging one of the kittens in place. -- 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. loose tintype portrait of a young girl reclining on the floor with her floppy-eared dog (surface wear particularly along left edge and image loss to upper right corner). -- 2 3/8 x 3 1/2 in. tintype portrait of an unaccompanied dog lying flat on the ground. San Francisco, CA: Cliff House Tin Type Gallery, n.d. (left corners clipped, some bending/creasing to plate, surface scratching in some spots). Housed loosely in a paper sleeve stamped for Cliff House Tin Type Gallery. -- And 8 other albumen and silver gelatin photographs, each 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in., or larger, on cardstock mounts. -- Together, 12 portraits featuring dogs and cats.
