Lot Description
A collection of 31 cabinet cards featuring 19th century military and political subjects, including:
Group portrait of Ulysses S. Grant and 8 other people outside of a mine in Virignia City, Nevada. [San Francisco?]: [Taber?], [1879] (spotting, toning, wear to image edges and corners; image rather thick, possibly cut from another cabinet card). Ink identification of subjects and setting on verso, Taber's imprint on mount recto. An example of this photograph in the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection is credited to Noe & Lee, making it possible that the photograph featured here has been cut and pasted on a Taber mount erroneously. -- Group portrait of President Chester A. Arthur and his party at the Webster Centennial (celebrating the life and work of Daniel Webster). Boston: Hardy, 1882 (photograph coming loose from mount, mount nearly fully separating into layers of paper, toning, spotting). Captioned and credited on mount recto. -- Oval bust portrait of Robert Todd Lincoln. Washington, DC: C.M. Bell, n.d. (light toning, soiling). Bell's imprint on mount recto, modern pencil identification on verso. -- Vignetted portrait of Colonel Norman M. Smith in uniform. Pittsburgh, PA: Dabbs, ca 1898 (spotting, soiling, wear to edges and corners). Dabbs' imprint on mount recto. Verso with pictorial imprint, ink inscription reading "Rec. from him May 10/98" and other penciled notations. -- Oval bust portrait of the 23rd governor of Lousiana from 1868-1872, Henry Clay Warmoth. New York: Bogardus, n.d. (light toning, soiling, wear to edges and corners). Ink identified on mount recto. Verso with Bogardus' pictorial imprint and ink inscription reading, "Compliments A Bogardus 1153 Bway." -- And 26 others. -- Together, 31 cabinet cards, each 4 1/8 x 5 3/4 in. or smaller, on cardstock mounts. Conditions generally fair, with some tears, soiling, toning, and wear to edges and corners present in most, to varying degrees.
