[TEXAS]. ROSE, Victor (1842-1893). The Life and Services of Gen. Ben McCulloch. Philadelphia, 1888
[TEXAS]. ROSE, Victor M. (1842-1893). The Life and Services of Gen. Ben McCulloch. Philadelphia: Pictorial Bureau of the Press, 1888.
8vo. Engraved portraits of McCulloch and Col. Munson. Original publisher's dark brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine (light wear to extremities). Provenance: Henry McCullogh (inscribed to Mrs. Gaylord on front free endpaper).
FIRST EDITION biography of Benjamin McCulloch (1811-1862), a Texas settler and soldier who fought in the Texas Revolution, the Mexican-American War (as a major-general in the Texas Militia and later as a major in the United States Army), and as a brigadier-general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He also served as a Texas Ranger, the sheriff of Sacramento County, and as a U.S. Marshall. During the Civil War, he commanded an under-supplied force to victory at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, before he was killed at the front line while commanding forces at Pea Ridge in 1862. This copy, gifted by his brother Henry, has two small corrections in his hand: correcting the caption of his father's title from "Maj." to "Gen'l"; and correcting the number of children from four to five, with a small note identifying the fifth child as Samuel.
