Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of CDV engraved portraits of war era generals and military men, including:
12 portraits by C.W. Thorne, New York, including Generals Hugh J. Kilpatrick, George B. McClellan, Henry W. Halleck, John C. Fremont, Joseph Hooker, Philip Kearny Jr., George G. Meade, and others. Most identified in pencil on recto and verso, each with Thorne's stamp and "Henry Y. Porter" handstamp on verso. -- 4 portraits by Joseph Ward, Boston, including Generals Winfield S. Hancock, James B. McPherson, George G. Meade, and Hugh J. Kilpatrick. Most identified in ink on verso, alongside Ward's stamp and "Henry Y. Porter" handstamp. -- 2 portraits by Charles Taber & Co., New Bedford, MA, including Colonel Baker and General George B. McClellan. Both subjects identified in print on verso alongside Taber's imprint and "Henry Y. Porter" handstamp. -- And 9 others, including 2 portraits of General George B. Meade by The New York Photographic Co., New York, and Case & Getchell, Boston, a possible from life portrait of Captain Barker B. Kent Jr. by S. Kingman, Boston, and 6 uncredited portraits. -- Together, 27 CDVs of war era generals and officers.
[With:] 1 3/4 x 2 1/8 in. tintype of a first lieutenant in uniform. Boston: G.P. Lasselle's, n.d. (Minor spotting, horizontal crease to plate.) Sealed in a paper mount with gilt embellishment (toning, spotting, soiling).
