Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Virginia war-date documents and covers incl. Confederate parole from Ashby's Cavalry.

Manuscript parole, 7 1/8 x 5 1/2 in. (scattered spotting, verso with adhesive repair at folds, toning). Culpeper Court House [VA], 21 August 1862. Dr. Arthur P. Burns, Medical Director Cavalry, Army of the Valley, signs the parole certifying that William Molloy, Co. D, 9th Regiment New York Volunteers, has been paroled and released. Malloy signs indicating that he will not bear arms or "assist in any way the enemies of the Confederate States during the present war until regularly exchanged."

HDS indicates that Arthur P. Burns enlisted on 6/17/1861 as an Assistant Surgeon and mustered into Field & Staff VA 7th Cavalry. Burns held various posts in the field and in Confederate hospitals during the war, and was serving with Ashby's Cavalry at the time he issued this parole. 

[With:] Partly printed "Final Statement of Joseph Hatcher deceased, late a private of Company K 58th Regiment Va. Infy." Dublin, VA. 15 March 1865. 8 1/4 x 13 in. (scattered ink marks, some light chipping, folds). Statement of the final claim of a soldier who died while in the Confederate service indicating that Hatcher was due $25 following his death on 10/13/1861 at White Sulpher Springs, WV.

[Also with:] Letter from Thaddeus A. Clay, a private in the VA Chesterfield Light Artillery, to a female friend. Battery Dantzler [VA]. 26 November 1864. 4pp, 5 x 8 in. (scattered spotting, toning, adhesive repair). -- Postal cover addressed to Captain W.B. Clement, Wise's Legion, Richmond, VA. With a Mocksville, NC cancellation. William Bailey Clement rose to the rank of Major, and served in the VA 10th Cavalry. -- Confederate stampless postal cover with "Paid" in script, addressed to Mrs. Susan McCauley, Salem, Roanoke Co., VA.
